Chickens ate staples!

I was hammer tacking some new chicken wire when one staple fell and a hen of mine had it in her mouth. I rushed to get it out but she instinctively ate and swallowed it.

As I was focused on her another hen went around and did the same thing. My luck.

The staples they swallowed were ARROW T50 1/2” staples.

I tried to induce both of them to vomit, but no luck. I have separated them to see if they pass them but I’m losing hope.

What can I do? I need to ensure they try and pass it because I don’t want them to have a punctured crop and slowly suffer. I have seen some people feed molasses to speed up digestion, I’m thinking that’s my next move.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Chickens swallow many different things, including glass, jewelry, screws, plastic, etc. Many times they remain inside the gizzard and may be found at butchering or necropsy. I heard someone recently recommend feeding sauerkraut, so that it might cushion the object in the gizzard to help it pass. It probably wouldn’t hurt to try that.

I manually fed them castor oil to do the same thing, hopefully it pans out. Otherwise Tim going to have to keep monitoring them . Thanks for the suggestion

Gosh, I hope your chickens will be okay. Do you have a vet near you that specializes in chickens? You might need their help if an organ gets punctured and/or internal bleeding starts. Good evening!! 🐔 🐔🐔

No we don’t any sort of avian vet nearby, and in reality there is not much they can do. I’m just gonna pray they pass it through.

It may also I hope to god be a false alarm. It is hard to believe they would be able to just gobble up a staple of that size so quickly. Of course they have their “eat before anyone else gets it” reaction but still. Maybe they never did eat anything but if it happened to both I doubt it
