I wondered, "Why can't chickens fly?" I've seen my chickens fly up to their treetop perch, but never fly. Do you guys know why?

Chickens are to heavy and their wings to small. There are a few breeds that can fly for a few minutes but it's more of a glide.
Very true. I had a serama that full blown flew though. Took a running start and flew over my house and into the woods. Lost him for a few days but luckily found him (alive and well).Or a wing-assisted leap.
My California White has vertical acceleration, but little endurance.

They're very small (about the size of a pigeon) and have lager wings then most chickens do compared to their body size. You may see your chickens take a running leap or jump a few feet of the ground but they won't make it very far.WOW that is one good flying serama.![]()
