Hi :)
I'm new to raising chickens-- just got six last week-- and looking forward to the fun! As a child, I "raised" chicks one summer, but over the course of six weeks I never got to see them grown. My town passed an ordinance a few years ago allowing chickens and this year I finally took the plunge. We're converting a backyard playhouse into the coop and constructing an attached run next to it. My chicks are a "rare breeds" assortment because I couldn't decide what I wanted but definitely wanted the category of "unusual." For me, the chickens are less about the eggs and more about being pets (eggs are a bonus).

I look forward to participating in this forum!

Hi Elizabeth, welcome to BYC!

I've been to Ann Arbor several times (son was a UM grad student) and it is a nice place. How cool that they allow you chickens.

If you haven't already, check out the articles under the Learning Center tab. There is some really good info there that will be helpful.

It will be interesting to see what chicks you end up with from the rare breed assortment. Share a photo if you'd like.

Nice to have you join us and if you have questions, feel free to ask!

Glad you joined us.

I agree with @NorthFLChick, definitely post a picture when your birds get bigger!

Thanks so much for the warm welcome! I want to post a picture of my sweet babies :) They are so cute I can't stand it!! There are six of them-- in this picture, Hillary Chicken (in the dark pantsuit-- she's a partridge cochin) is sort of hiding ;-)
