Chickens Screaming Bloody Murder

Hello everyone

I've searched pretty far and wide on the internet regarding chicken sounds and come up with nothing.

My girls just started laying. Coincidentally, they also started singing this very strange song that is very shrill, very high pitched and sounds exactly like a human female screaming. In fact, the first time I heard it, I thought it was the distant scream of someones daughter playing in a back yard.

I THOUGHT only my hens did it, but my rooster has done it too (immediately afyer he dropped a large tird). It HAS coincided with the laying of an egg, but not always.

Does anyone know what it means? I've seen a LOT of chicken videos with different sounds but none that play or explain this one.

Thanks! 🙂

Is there any way you could record that sound so we could hear it?

Chickens make a lot of different sounds, they have their own language. They could be showing a mood, asking where the others are if they are separated, a predator waring, or maybe surprise.

There is one we call the egg song. Some hens sing that after she comes off of the nest. She wants to rejoin the flock but isn't sure where the flock is so she asks. Sometimes they ignore her, sometimes the rooster goes to get her and mates her when he finds her (since she is laying eggs she needs to be fertile) and leads her back to the flock. There is a similar song they sing when they are nervous and think a predator may be near. I think there is one that shows boredom or is just complaining.
