I was going to put this under "Emergencies" but I think I handled it?

I feel horrible. I came home from work and the large chicken waterer I have was bone dry in the trough. There's like 5 gallons of water still in the main part but somehow the water isn't flowing. I have no idea how long the 18-week-old pullets were without water. It's the hottest day of the year! 101 degrees and humid.

I immediately picked up the waterer and just jarring it seemed to get the water flowing. I quickly added electrolytes and a frozen bottle. They all swarmed to the water and chugged it.

I added a second 1 gallon waterer I had on hand just in case.

I also had a frozen watermelon slice on hand and gave them that. And found a little battery powered fan in my camping gear to direct some air flow.

Then I noticed a couple of them sort of threw up the water? Is that ok?! I'm wondering if they just drank too fast.

They also appear to be peeing. I'm guessing the poop is so watery because they just drank so much water at once.

After my actions, they all seem fine now. I mean.. they're hot, of course. But they're walking around and eating and just acting normally. Other than the liquid poo that looks like water and a little bit of spit up from a couple. I only saw it happen twice and they basically acted like nothing happened.

Is everything going to be ok? My poor chickens.

Ok it's been a few hours and I went out to check on him before they put themselves to "bed."

Everyone seems normal. They weren't panting anymore and were all acting fine. Whew! I honestly thought I had killed them all.

I still don't know why the water wasn't coming out but I have multiple water options for them now.

Yes you did everything right! They throw-up if they drink to fast and have not gotten water in a long time. They should be fine now 🥰
One thing I would do is keep the fan pointed away from the chickens, maybe point it so it sucks the hot air out from the coop or put a wet cloth over it to create cool air.

Sounds good. I grabbed a gallon of tap water to freeze and was going to put it in front of the fan tomorrow hoping it would help. They do have plenty of shade in their run, thankfully.

wonderful! It's just that when I put the fan pointing at the chickens they lose there breath easily. 😊

Oh. I didn't even think of that. Thank God for all the kind folks on BYC!

I'll either point the fan at the water jug or I'll somehow mount it and point it down instead of directly at the chickens. Thanks again, CC!

of course! I also found pointing it out will suck out the hot air 🥰
My brother made some swamp coolers from mine and the work great! I know that is something you probably won't be able to do since it takes some time and practice to make.
