Hey,
I feel seasoned enough at this point to know something is up. Right from me pulling this lone hatched chick from the incubator, it's eyes have continued to crust shut. It's now two and half almost 3 days old and had a rough hatch. After hatching it spend a day laying in the incubator not moving, hardly breathing. Out of 9 eggs I got from a breeder it's the only one that hatched.
It perked up in the incubator after it fluffed out and it now seems like a normal chick, except every few hours I'm having to uncrust its eyes with a warm paper towel. I hatch chicks regularly to sell, this year alone I've hatched over 300, I have never seen this.
I'm worried this may be mycoplasma or some other type of disease passed down to chicks from their parents.
I have the chick isolated with another chick I hatched a week ago. It's good, eating, drinking, pooping as normal. Just the eyes keep crusting shut constantly.
Any ideas?

Oh! Can I add is there a way to test for Mycoplasma? I definitely do not want this spreading into my birds!

Have you asked the breeder about it?

There isn't a disease I've heard of that can be transferred to within an egg, but there can be some transferred on the eggshell itself. I wrote an article about one such disease, Marek's, and how to sterilize eggs to kill it. (Link in my signature.)

I would rinse its eyes with sterile saline solution and then put some terramycin ointment in them. That's for eye infections and maybe would help.

Good luck!
