Hi,
I have a flock of Chinese painted quail. They are young and I am quite sure only two of my three females are laying.
So far I have seen only brown speckled eggs, which is what I thought the eggs would look like but yesterday I found a new egg.
It is light green to blue in color with fewer dots and is a bit larger than the other kind.

The quail are housed with finches and I am certain it's a quail egg.
Anyone else stumbled upon such an egg? Is it normal for the species to have differences in egg color?

Thanks,
Maayan

When they first start laying they have varied color eggs as well as the diet of each bird reflects in the color of the eggs from that hen. Sounds like #3 started laying too. Good Luck and enjoy these little ones they are addicting.

Thanks for the information, since they are in a cage I suppose their diet should be quite similar, they don't strike me as the picky type.
Very interesting information, never knew that they could have different egg colors, hope she keeps it up though, I love this color

when the hens are first laying they sometimes produce white to blue colored egg shells. This is normal and is because the egg is not held long enough in the bird to get the coating of pigmentation, the brown coloring. Also sometimes in the summer it the eggs pass through the birds reproduction system faster and this can lead to bluer colored shells. This is all normal as long as the birds is showing no signs of illness. There are several illnesses that can cause this but I think your are because they are young and it is summer (more natural sun light).
