2 yr old hen started acting off a few days ago. Didn’t want to come out of run with the group and was standing tail up and straining to lay or poop. I noticed she had a mess stuck to her feathers around her vent, including what looked like egg yolk. I had found a few shellless eggs and a couple that seemed like they were coated with egg yolk (but otherwise intact), but didn’t know who it was. Assuming it was her, I figured she may have some reproductive issues going on and maybe an egg broke inside.
I gave her a calcium tablet and brought her onto my screened in porch to keep a closer eye on her. The calcium seemed to help and she was even up on a perch, so she was mobile and energetic enough for that. She had stopped straining to pass anything. It’s been cold so I didn’t want to bath her, so I just cut off all the mess the best I could, cleaned her up with a cloth, and sprayed her vent with some vetericyn. She’s been drinking and interested in food (20% crumble mash, mixed with electrolytes), scratching around, so somewhat improved but she has not laid and still has diarrhea, and doesn’t seem to uh… pass it with much enthusiasm. It seems like it just kinda leaks.
it’s yellowish white (but a few days ago had some bloody mucus and she did pass some bright green stool 2 nights ago - I have not seen either since). She is not lethargic, her tail feathers held normal, comb is red, bright eyes.
I don’t have funds or access to a vet right now. What can I treat her with to get past the diarrhea and back to normal (that I can get online or at TSC without an Rx)?
Should note I have her with another hen who I’m treating for pretty severe sour crop- monistat 2x per day, ACV water, crop massages.
Ideas?
