here in california we are experiencing a heat wave and the night-time low is 82 for 1 hour. Its 90 at midnight. 12 of them are cold hardy breeds and they appear to be doing better then the ones the are not. I already have them with 5 water treys in the yard and 2 jn the coop 1 filled with Gatorade. Yesterday I had to bring one inside to cool off. Is there anything else I can do.

Are you able to buy electrolytes for them? Instead of Gatorade with all the sugar...

Freeze a couple of gallon jugs of water and put in their run during the day and maybe one at night when it's in the 80's. Some ice cubes in their water bowl... freeze or make some mealworms ice cubes, and share some of your watermelon!

This heatwave is no joke 😓

I'm using the sugur free Gatorade. I'll try the ice trick. And my chickens surprisingly don't like watermelon they prefer plumbs and pears.

I'm in NC where it's hot and humid for most of the summer. I've been putting ice cubes in their water, fan in the coop and making sure they get their dust bath. You can also freeze corn in muffin pans and give them that. There are electrolyte packets you can put in their water. I think I found them on Amazon.
My cousin lives in Temecula and her husband put a window a/c unit in their coop. 😁

Those are great options! My chickens go crazy for mealworms except one, go figure. They like cucumber too! I would just try different things. If you don't have the option to putting a fan, be sure they have lots of shade. I read online last night some put ice or cold water at the bottom of a shallow tray so they can cool off their feet.

Putting a frozen gallon of water in the coop at night near where they roost is a great idea!

Today is supposed to be the last day of the worst of it (108), then for us down to 103 tomorrow. We have been freezing large blocks of ice and letting them melt down in the mud so their feet stay cool. However I did have to bring the two older girls into the laundry room for a few hours the day it was 111. They're still mad at me.

Where do you live at in N.C.? I live in Fayetteville and am a first time chicken owner (my wife’s fault lol, but I love these birds!) what sort of chickens do you have?
