Hi all
We a 36 hole mini golf course with a large pond in Florida, we have 11 muscovy ducks here. We have lost over 40 ducklings to hawks in the past year. We have 14 eggs that should hatch within a week. How big would I need to build a coop to hold them all til they are couple months old ?

For the 14 ducklings, you’ll want to build a coop that gives them plenty of space to grow, stay safe from predators, and be comfortable. A good rule of thumb for ducklings is about 1–2 square feet per duckling during the first couple of months, depending on how much space they’ll need to move around and get exercise.

For 14 ducklings, you’d want at least 14 to 28 square feet in total. If you can give them more space, like 30–40 square feet, that would be even better as they get a bit older. Make sure the coop is secure from hawks—small gaps in the roof or sides could still allow predators to reach them, so be sure to cover the top or use netting.

In addition to space, keep in mind:

  • Ventilation for airflow
  • A dry, soft bedding area to sleep
  • Easy access to water for them to swim or dabble in, even as ducklings

I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU!!

It’s actually 1-2 sqft for the first few weeks, not months. They’ll need closer to 4 sqft pretty quickly, at about 1 month old. I personally like to choose the larger size from the start for simplicity’s sake. So, 50-60 sqft would be good.

So sorry about your ducklings. Ducklings are very susceptible to predators, so I keep all ducklings indoors & only let them outside supervised. I hope these next 14 will be better.
