Just picked up 3 hens and a rooster (plus a tag-along banty). they are Coronation X Light Sussex (From Greenfire Farms stock). the fella said they had a 50% of laying coronation sussex and a 50% chance of laying light sussex

i understand the coronations are fairly rare, don't know about the lights

anyway, how is it they will lay one or the other? i've had chickens all my life, just no designer types, just the barred rocks, RIRs, etc. after growing up around animals all my life, it is my experience that breeding 2 breeds will render a mix of the two, not that they will lay/give birth to one or the other...

how is this possible (if it is possible)?

they all look like coronations (except the banty - i just know she likes to fly, she's really quick and she's a b***h to catch), the white with the lavender/gray markings of the coronations

edited to say: the coronations came from greenfire, don't know where the lights came from

If they're all white/lavender, then they're all Coronations and that's all you'll have hatch.

Is this what they look like?

i believe so, maybe a little darker color on the neck. the tail is darker.

the birds' parents were rooster from greenfire, light from i don't know where, but i believe greenfire also.

Coronation is a recessive, lavender gene. It sounds like you have split Lights--which means they look like Lights but carry a Coronation gene.

Most likely, they are from Greenfire as well.

I have a trio of Light Sussex, one split Sussex (appears light but carries the lavender gene) and one Coronation.

You can't tell the difference between Lights & Splits visually. Only when/if you breed them to other Lights, Splits or Coronations.

Lavender X Lavender = 100% Lavender offspring

Lavender X Split = 50% Lavender, 50% Split offspring

Lavender X Black = 100% Split offspring

Split X Black = 50% Split, 50% Black offspring

Split X Split = 25% Lavender, 50% Split, 25% Black offspring

they're darker than pure coronations, they must be splits.

i believe they're all the same color, but the hens were pretty dirty, and i didn't get a real good look at them (at least when knowing what to look for)

i don't doubt he got them from greenfire farms. i just couldn't understand how they would give one or the other. if i am understanding you correctly, they are all the same birds, just different colors; kind of like a red haired kid and his brown-haired brother.

thanks, guys

i wanted to try hatching some eggs, and didn't want to misrepresent what the chicks were (not that i thought they were worth gold, i knew they were not pure coronations when i purchased them). I haven't seen lights or coronations in the area, so others might be interested in some new blood

definitely look like the light sussex. we'll give them a bit of time and then see what they'll produce for chicks

Yes, those are definitely splits, or lights. If they're all splits then approximately 25% of the chicks should be Coronations.

Cool! thanks for the info

yes, they're all the same color. the hen in the background is white with the same markings, she just is very dirty (their pen was very muddy)
