Could this be a vitamin deficiency or possibility of crop issues?

Hiya all!

Can someone help me figure out what is going on with our 19 week old Buff Orpington Buttercup - she seems to extend her neck and twitch?
She is eating, drinking and otherwise fine, this has only just started today.

All of our other hens in the flock seem fine also!

Could this be an issue with her crop (she is a greedy guts!) Or is this the beginning of Wry neck?

TIA!

How often does she do this, or was it only once?
Is it possible to upload a video?

Sometimes, they do that to re-arrange the contents of their crop, which is normal.
If its possible, check her crop in the morning, before shes eaten anything. It should be empty -if not, she might have a sour/impacted crop.

Good luck!

It’s great that Buttercup is otherwise doing well, but those neck movements can definitely be concerning. Here are a couple of things to consider:
  1. Crop Issues: Since you mentioned she’s a greedy eater, it could be that she’s experiencing crop issues like an impacted or sour crop. You might want to check if her crop feels hard, squishy, or enlarged. Sometimes, chickens extend their necks or have unusual movements when trying to digest food or pass something that's stuck. You can try massaging the crop gently or withholding food for a bit to see if that helps clear it up.
  2. Wry Neck: Wry neck (or torticollis) is another possibility, though it often comes with other symptoms like difficulty standing or walking, drooping eyes, and a twisted neck. If it’s just the twitching and neck extension, it might not be full-blown wry neck yet. Wry neck can sometimes be caused by a vitamin deficiency (like vitamin E or selenium), so you might want to supplement her diet with some vitamins just in case.
If it doesn’t seem to improve or if other symptoms show up, it might be worth consulting a vet. Let me know if you notice anything else!

Does it look like this rooster at the feed dish? This rooster is adjusting his crop.
