U.K.
Hiya my ducks are breathing better today :D:celebrate They are foraging outside as it’s really nice and warm. We have a crab apple tree and they seem to like the apples. Are they ok to eat these? They go for the softer half rotten / over ripe ones.
Thanks 😊

The general concern of the ducks eating the Crabapple Fruits is not the fleshy part, but rather the inner seed which contains trace amounts of Amygdalin. The keyword here is "trace amounts", unless your ducks are eating it as almost a whole diet, I personally would not be concerned by the least. They may get a little "tipsy" if they start to ferment though. :D

🤣 haha tipsy duck! okay Thank you! I feel better about them eating them then. Choking is a slight concern, they’re still little at 4 weeks but seem to spit out what they can swallow. There aren’t many on the ground yet so sounds like they’ll be ok for now

Hello and Welcome to BYC. Your softer half rotten apples are easier for them to eat and also a bit sweeter. :)

thank you! I tried eating one (grantee it was still green) and it was the most dry, bitter fruit I’ve ever tasted in my life so I thought for sure they wouldn’t like them but I guess it makes sense that they overripe ones are a little more palatable!
