Cracked Egg When Laying

This morning, we had a chicken lay an egg, but it was cracked, and the yolk went everywhere. She began pecking at the shell, so we quickly cleaned up the mess, worried she'd get in the habit of pecking her eggs. Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Yes this can happen if the shell is weak, or the nest isn't bedded enough as they stand up to push the egg out. Most broken eggs do end up eaten as the hen is attempting to clean up the nest.
