The correct product would be Terramycin but i dont have that. I do have Gentamicin 100mg/ml which can be used for eye infections. (Having a daughter who is a liscensed vet has its advantages)

That is way way more strength than i need. Any suggestions on a dilution other than 'Yup that much in a visine bottle with saline solition in it should do the job.'

Thanks

What is it that you are treating? Terramycin (oxytetracycline) eye ointment is available at most feed stores if you ask for it (it is usually locked away.) It has fewer side effects that genticmycin, which can damage kidneys and hearing if overdosed. It looks like 0.3% gentimycin is what may be used in eye drops. Can’t your vet daughter prescribe the eye drops? Vets can also prescribe erythromycin eye ointment, which is similar to Terramycin. Here is some info on gentimycin:

None of the feed stores have it in stock, TSC is useless and my daughter won't be in the clinic until next weekend. If this cockerel was one of my whites i would have culled him already but i only have one dark cockerel and pullet to start my new line out this year.

For the last 2 days ive had him on 200mg/40mg of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim respectively 2x a day. Going keep him on it for the recommended 3 days. Like most areas avian vets are a rare and endangered species. I intentionally erred on the side of worst case with the sulfa drug combination. I've seen no response so far so I'm thinking it's just an eye infection from something getting in the eye.

If it was corrzya or MG it would have responded by now plus there was no respiratory distress.

Thanks. I was hoping you would see this. You have great resources. I bookmark all of them for future reference

Bactrim or smz-tmp is more treatment of coryza. MG is usually treated with tylan (tylosin) or tetracycline.

Most TSC’s and feed stores lock up Terramycin ointment because of shoplifting due to it’s small size, and you will need to ask a clerk for it.

I would get some testing done on your sick birds to do a PCR respiratory disease panel through Zoologix, a national company. They will test for most respiratory bacterial and biral diseases with 3 swabs, which your daughter may help you collect. It costs around $90 and is done through the mail.

Be aware about most respiratory diseases that can make your other birds carriers. MG also can pass down through hatching eggs as well.

@Eggcessive The sulfa drug I named is the generic form of Bactrim. It is listed as effective for MG also. I think the tylan/tylosin treatment for MG became the common antibiotic of choice due to availability and low cost.

Sulfa drugs have a broader spectrum of action. Bactrim is also listed for e.coli, staphylococcus and coccidious. One of the old school drugs I keep around.

I've used the gentamicin on birds when tylan injections failed to turn a sick bird around. It is quickly becoming my go to injection combined with the Bactrim for sick birds.

@Eggcessive Well someone has their info wrong on the internet. It's disappointing to find out that not everything on the internet is true. Lol.

Sending you a PM on an entirely different topic.
