After receiving several recommendations for creolin-type products for coop use, I decided to go ahead and purchase some. I've done a ton of reading and found information on various dilutions and uses for it, so I know how much to use in the water when I scrub down the coops, but I'm seeing conflicting information as to whether I'm supposed to rinse it off or not. I've read that after scrubbing, it should be rinsed, but if the intent is also to disinfect, that it needs to be left to dry on the surface. The amount to use per gallon is very small, so I'm not sure it makes a huge difference, either way -- but I'm wondering if anyone knows for sure and/or has any personal experience.

Thank you!

I use a sprayer with plain dish soap, (I prefer to use Dawn original Blue) and water. Just a little more soapy than what you'd make to wash dishes. For the main areas I spray everything down, then go back in about 5 minutes, and rinse it down. For the roosts, I hose with plain water, until the pooh is softened, then use a brush, and soapy water to finish cleaning them, and rinse afterwards. With my set up, everything can dry pretty quickly.

While dish soap won't prevent everything, it does a pretty good job of cleaning, and disinfecting, while being a safer choice regarding toxicity. Just be sure to rinse well. Once or twice a year should be sufficient. I like to do it when it warms up in the Spring, then in the Fall before it turns cold.

I also bathe my chickens at least once a year. I was showing them, and they have to be bathed to show them.
