Hi everyone! I have mixed flock of hens, and I'm planning on trying to hatch some eggs next year, for fun, not for selling. My goal is to have beautiful colours of eggshells.
My current flock has 2 araucanas, 2 cream legbars (not purebred but pretty close), 2 leghorns, 1 marans 1 olive egger, and the rest lays normal lightbrown eggs, 15 hens now all together.
My dilemma is what would be better, to get an Araucana rooster or to have a Cream Legbar rooster. As per egg colour, it doesn't really matter, both give blue egg genetics. As per aesthetic, I prefer Araucana so the chicks will be closer to them, possibly rumpless, with funny tufts, beards, etc. As per egg production, CL is much better, 180 against 280, but I haven't seen a lot of legbar mixes so far, and what I've seen they are pretty ridiculous, they don't really look good. As per health I have no idea. As per meat, also no idea (we would probably slaughter the roosters when grown to size, and keep the hens for eggs).
Alternatively, should I just leave my flock as is and buy fertilised eggs to incubate from others... Please remember I live in Hungary, we don't have these big shops you can buy chicks or hatching eggs from.
Thanks for your advice!
