I have a 24 week old hen whose crop doesn’t seem to empty at night. She acts completely normal. Lays eggs, plays, dust baths, poops fine, cleans herself. She does not have a sour crop smell. I have withheld food for 24 hours and given coconut oil and massage. Any ideas? Thank you!!!

Her crop looks distended. Does it feel hard, firm, or doughy? Can you check it each morning to see if it empties or is smaller? What are you feeding her? Do you have granite poultry grit available in a separate container from feed? Give her fluids all day long, and electrolytes and vitamins or NutriDrench 2 ml a day is good. Chilled coconut oil can be offered for her to peck at daily 1-2 tsp to treat impacted crop. Massage several times a day. It may help to worm her with Valbazen or SafeGuard since worms can sometimes cause crop problems. Miconazole, Monistat, or Medistatin powder can be used to treat sour crop. A crop bra can help if she is developing pendulous crop. In some cases people use acidified copper sulfate 1/4 tsp per gallon of water for crop problems when other treatments fail. Here is Azygous’s good crop disorder article:

She does have access to grit. It feels a little soft but not bad. I’ve done the coconut all day today and no food.

Does she need to be isolated? No food? I’m thinking impacted but not completely since she is pooping normal.
