Hey all! Fairly new to the breeding game and I’m working on getting 3 pens going of adults

I'm curious as to what batam breeds get along with and cross breed well with Pekin bantams? I want a line of purebreds and curious of adding in maybe a Silkie, JapBantam etc just as collecting different breeds for fun, and want to know if anyone has raised a crossbred from any Pekin Bantam rooster crossed other bantam hens. Thank you!!

Welcome! Silkies make funny babies, here’s one of my silkie Cochin mixes, Bob Ross. they’re the sweetest chickens I have and good luck on your hunt!

I think if you want to have them for fun and not for business you can’t go wrong. I like weird mixes a lot! Hahah

Any breed, large, or small will breed fine with Silkies. That also depends on what size of Silkie you have.

Thank you for the reply. But it Pekin bantam crosses I’m curious about. Silkies we’re just mentioned as a potential cross to the Pekin , not as the main subject

Yes, I know. But I was using them as other cross breed examples with silkies. I did put(Any Breed). if that makes sense.

I have no Pekin/Cochin Bantams.

I can't say which breeds would be especially good, but I cannot think of any bad breeds for this purpose.

Some particular traits that I can predict:

Since the Pekins have feathered feet, you would probably get feathered feet on all of the chicks. If one parent has clean feet, chicks will have less feathers on their feet; but if both parents have feathered feet, chicks will have heavier feathering on their feet (like the purebred Pekins do.)

Since the Pekins have single combs, if you cross to a breed with a different comb type, the chicks are likely to have the other comb type, or possibly a comb that looks different than either parent.

If you cross to a crested breed, you will probably get crested chicks.

If you cross to a breed with 5 toes, you will probably get chicks with 5 toes.

If you cross with a Silkie, the chicks will have normal feathers, not silkie feathers.

If you cross with a Frizzle, about half the chicks will have frizzled feathers.

Depending on what color your Pekin bantams are, there are many possible colors that the crossed chicks could be.

If you cross with a blue-egg or green-egg breed, daughters will probably lay green eggs.

If you cross with a Japanese (really short legs), some chicks may have really short legs as well.
