Hi there,
Our Colombian black has got a cut on the top of her beak. Does this need treating or cleaning in any way or is it best left to heal on its own?

This is our first injury since getting the girls 6 months ago.

Advice greatly appreciated!

Look around for any sharp areas on feeders/waterers or on chicken wire or fencing. They can injure the beaks from poking their beaks through those. If you have Betadine, chlorhexidene, or other disinfectant, apply some.

Thanks so much, it doesn't seem to be bothering her but will give it a clean and keep an eye on it. Thanks for the reminder about the chicken wire, that stuffs a nightmare!

I didn't notice a hardware cloth hazard in my chick playground and they all stuck their head in there and got nose bleed. All of them. It healed on its own. It might take a while though.

Sometimes they can even break their beaks on wire fencing if they are being chased and of course if they are fighting. These scrapes usually will heal in time.
