Hi,

What is this??
One of my barred rocks has what looks like a cyst between her toes. I came on her and saw bumblefoot and freaked out a bit, but she's had this thing for weeks, and I don't think that is what it it. There is no scabbing underneath nor any other irritation showing up.

It looks like a giant TICK that is under the skin. It's very hard. She doesn't like to be touched, so took me a while to grab her and get these pictures. It feels like a rock under the skin.

anyone seen this before and have suggestions??
i put a few more pictures in my profile, but they are not great. She's feisty!

it doesn't seem to bother her, it doesn't seem to have changed in size, so not sure if i should be worried??

You might want to do some research on gout in chickens. I read somewhere that when there is a hard swelling between the toes, and you can actually move it around under the skin, it can be gout.

You would need to lower her intake of protein. If you look thru the archives here on others with gout, there are foods that can help to remove all the build up in the feet from gout.

Mystery solved...don't I feel stupid that I let my chicken walk around for the last month like this...

I was reading about gout but the knot was very black, not calcium-like. No signs of infection or redness. Guy at the feed store said cut it open and clean. I googled last night and found a discussion of someone eho said her hen had basically a giant poo-ball stuck up in her toes.

Um......:p
I grabbed her this morning and looked under her foot. I was sure I looked before. All mostly clean and soft, but a big dirty patch. Yeah, it wasn't a seed but it looked like a seed, I just kept pushing it down and it came right out. So maybe it was part of a seed but a bit of dirt and it was just stuck in there.

I'm pretty careful, I think, but we have learned some hard lessons with chickens, and I'm usually over-thinking.
Keep it simple. Would have sworn that I very thoroughly examined her but not enough.
Now I have a girl with a nice clean pink foot, no broken skin, and I think we're very lucky indeed!

I know this thread is old. It helped me solve the same issue. My hen's foot looked the same and I found junk stuck between her toes pushing her skin up between. It was there for a long time and I never could figure it out. Both feet were cleaned (3 toes had junk between them). Now I will keep an eye on them.

Thanks all

^ reiterating same as the above poster. I just want to say thank you for solving this as my chicken had the exact same problem. It didn’t quite seem like bumblefoot, scaley leg mites, or gout. Really cleaned out the bottom of her foot and found out it was just some impacted dirt. She is on her way to recovery now.

Same thing, used wood chopstick, soft small tip..under running water ,peroxide.neosporin.all done.she was happy! And I clean her feet, but hard to see in Maybe this is so common Shoukd be more details given to everyone ,I don’t think anyone know.
My chicken,liitle tail,is 7 years.Only just saw lump.thought cartalage.I knew she never had a lump there.Has to hurt,hope everybody checks.
