Ok so thats not a good title. I know that Rouen is the domesticated version of the Wild Mallard and that Rouens are larger.

We bought 3 Rouens this spring as day olds from the local feed store. They were labeled as Rouens and when they are a day old you kind of have to take their word for it.

Well today we went to our local fair and were looking at the ducks. In the one pen they had Rouens, the thing is these things were huge, like the size of a Pekin. My Rouens are half the size of these.

Other than size is there a way to tell if I have Mallards or Rouens?

This is the best picture I have of them.

Rouens have two black stripes on their face, one across their eye and one just under their eye. Mallards only have one eye stripe, across their eye. You can tell by the stipes from day olds. From what it looks like, yours only have one stripe, which means mallard.

I can't really tell from the pictures but keep in mind that a show quaility Rouen and a hatchery Rouen will not look the same. Show quaility will be much bigger.

Mallards are about the size of call ducks. I think yours are rouens. Rouens don't reach full size until they are 1 1/2 years old, so it is possible that the ones at the fair were mature adults.

Oops. Just saw the second pic, those chickens aren't quite as big as I thought

I'd say they are mallards

Well I clipped one wing on them, so I cant really tell you if they could fly far.

I guess the ones at the fair were show, the one had a Grand Champ ribbon.

Give us a close up of around their eye area. Roeuns typically have 2 stripes. Mallards....only 1.

Here are progressive pics of my rouen drake....
