Hi,

We got three baby chicks last Friday (RR, BOrpington, Blk Australorp). We had wanted an EE, but they were out. So I will be getting that chick either Wednesday or Friday of this week, so it will be about a week younger than the other three. Any behavior problems with mixing chicks only a week apart? Also, what about the temperature in the brooder?

Thanks!

No issues on either.

Your brooder should be large enough to allow the chicks to self regulate anyhow. The brooder should have temps as high as 85-90 on the highest extreme, in the light, to cool temps as cool as possible, 60's preferred where they can go and cool off.

You'll have no issues at this age.

i have 1-3 weeks olds and 2 5 week old mystery bantys in one brooder and 5-6 week olds in another for some reason the 5 week olds i have in with the younger ones seem to like it better i guess they don't have to compete for food as much as when they were in the big girl brooder and they kinda hung out together away from the others and when with the little girls they all hang out ina big chickie pile

How about my two gold comet chicks (3 weeks) and my first group of pullets that are now 6 weeks. I tried putting the 3 week olds in with them but the little ones get so scare when the bigger ones approach them. The older chicks are being pretty nice to them, only pecking them gently, no blood being drawn but the younger ones scream bloody murder. I put them back in the tub in the garage for now to get another week older. Any suggestions? Here they are....to see size difference.

I Have 3 week old mixed with 3 day olds and they did fine. You in the coop (if you have room) you can put a little cage in there and they will get used to the little ones.

This is a really helpful thread

I've got 5 two week old chicks, just hatched 5 more today. So I'm hoping after reading this thread I'll be OK to mix them- I will probably leave it a week or so until the little ones are a bit bigger as they seem much bigger than today's new arrivals. Does that sound OK?

No, I don't have a small cage available to separate them. So just put them all together and let them work it out? I just hate to hear the younger ones scream...even though they are not being attacked. I think the size of the older chicks intimidates the smaller ones. Only time will help them co-mingle......right? Thanks!

All this info is so helpful! I got 6 chicks last week (2 Black Sex-Link, 2 Golden Comets, and 2 Dominiques) who are now between 1 and 1.5 weeks old, and my Araucanas won't be in until next week. So glad to know they'll probably do OK together. Whew!
