Anyone know what causes this? The egg looks bloody and has clumps of tiny egg-like things stuck on it. My husband thinks its calcium depisits. You can see in the second picture it cleans up well. It seems to me that the blood would be from an irritated egg duct, but why is that and what do I do?

Is this a one time thing or consistent?
How old is the pullet/hen?
What do you feed including treats?
Do you offer oyster shell free choice?
It does look like calcium deposits to me. Blood can be from a tiny blood vessel that ruptured during the laying process.

I'm sorry, I meant to give those details. Yes they have oyster shells free choice they are fed acomplete layer feed. And it's happened a few times. I don't know which hen is laying this egg. We have some in their first summer of laying and some in their second summer of laying.

There is not a lot that you can do to correct something like this. I would still look over everyone for lice/mites, watch them to see if there's anyone that is stressed. Even when things seem to be going well, you may see one that's a little off or there's some subtle drama going on. If you have never wormed, get a fecal float to see if they need worming.
