Hello everyone! After a dog attack that left 3 birds dead, my living birds don’t look their best. Their feet are swollen and I think they have scaly mites/mites. Can I put dish soap to kill the mites while I soak them? I’ve cleaned out my coop and have given two different types of mite preventative. Thanks in advance!!

Sorry about the attack and the loss of three. :( I hope you can resolve this so your others are safe.

We've never had mites here other than the SLM (scaley leg mites). For those, the first two times they got them, we went into the coop at night and slathered vaseline all over the legs and feet of them all. We skipped a night or two, then did this again, three separate times over a 10 day period.

The third time they got them, we tried Ivermectin 5% and that worked well too. Just one drop on their neck (silkies) and repeat in 10 days.

For other kinds of mites on them, most use Permethrin powder/garden powder. You'd remove the birds from the coop and sprinkle that all over and in the nest boxes. Rub it into their roosts. Then let the chickens come in, and at night, rub it all over them, making sure to get under their wings and butt well too.

As for bathing, you can use a small amount of dish soap. Epsom Salts work too.

Do you have photos of the feet?
