Hi,

Has anyone used Stunner/Captive bolt gun on rabbit?
I am starting to raise some meat rabbits and is learning how to humanly dispatch them.
I came across this item and as wondering if this is useful.
I would imagine it is like a gun which kills rabbit instantly.
But as I have never used it before I just want to ask if this is useful or not? Does it actually kill rabbit instantly?
I don't want to leave rabbit in unnecessary pain.

Thanks!

I would not use it. I do know they use them in cattle and my understanding is that they take training.

I have done hundreds or rabbits and this is the method I always use:
CW: Graphic video of rabbit butchering!

You can also get the sideways version and make or buy a rabbit wringer which does the same thing.

Broomsticking takes very little practice, does the deed in seconds, preserves the hide well and works super well.

:goodpost: I raised meat rabbits, wish I'd known this "broomstick" method. Similar to what I did, held the same with one hand & snapped the neck with my other ... Instant. I salvaged the meat & fur, tanned the hide & sold to crafters. I also collected poop under the cages, drained & sold. Think raising meat rabbits is a no waste deal however, after a few years I couldn't/didn't want to do it anymore :hugs

Yeah, broomsticking is simple, easier even for people without a lot of arm strength because it uses your whole body in the motion. Even easier with the horizontal version where you can walk or lean away with your whole body. And if you watch the video it's about three seconds from step to done. Given that it takes a couple seconds for the brain to process sensation, that means that there's literally about one second of pain before the brain goes into shock and dies.
It's also a suggested method of dispatch for chickens, considered one of the most humane things you could possibly do at home. Highly recommended by every person I know who raises rabbits with the exception of the people who use a BB gun to the head. But again - training and practice.

Just get the book Storey's Guide to Raising Meat Rabbits by Bob Bennett. He tells how to kill rabbits quickly and humanely.

We processed 15 last weekend (that was a LOT for my first time O.O) and also would highly recommend the neck-wringing method of any kind. Little bit more twitching than I'd like but once you get that good snap they are gone gone gone.

I'd feel so so stupid paying $50 for that wringer, but I'm considering it, it would make things even easier.

I also would have hesitations about the gun, although if I felt confident in my ability to use it well every time that might be a different story.
