Do all roos have favorite girls that they peck the crap out of or is that just some? Wondering if I need to try another roo... My poor BA is getting all her neck feathers pulled out and it's only day 3 since he has been in the flock.

Hi, welcome to the forum. Glad you joined.

How old is he? How old is she? What is some of the backstory? What have you done as far as integration? How many other chickens do you have and how old are they? How much room do they have, in the coop and outside? Are your hens laying or still too young to lay? Is that BA pretty old or maybe the dominant hen?

There are different things that could be going on. It could be pretty normal and typical or it could be dangerous, I can't tell which. The better you can explain what is going on the more chance we can help.

I have 6 ladies, and only two became bald on Their wing area and head, so I would say yes.

Ok, Piangi is 5mo old. My flock is a year old in April. They have been so wonderful, laying all winter without extra light and we live in North Utah. They are a mixed flock of 9 ladies. No two alike. The hen in question is a mid range on the pecking order. Neither at the top, nor at the bottom. She is not picked on by the other girls. Piangi had a quarantine but he was brought over twice to meet each girl through the fence for just a little. Then he had a half day with them in the run and him outside where they could get to know each other. That night around 11PM , I put him in the coop where he slept near them. I didn't witness any mating until day 2. He DID do a slight rooster dance. He has one girl that loves him that he doesn't beat up. He just can't get enough of that big Australorp booty. I hate to think of what she will look like in a month. If she's nearly bald after 3 days. Oh, and they have about 1/3 acre of land they can free range on.

Assuming they have enough food and space so nobody is stressed out then yeah the guys will pick a favorite or two.
When you have a young guy still full of ambition those girls get easy to spot really fast.
All my roosters have made a beeline towards the dominique hens.
They're the hens most likely to turn them down in no uncertain terms.
Those barred bottoms are hypnotic apparently.;)

My new roo Gabrielle is a gentle giant. Across the street there is a white hen ( I named her Miss Prissy) that must lay golden eggs because she rings his bell and is definitely his favorite save for Beepea the black sex link I got for him. He doesn't peck her though not anyone else. Prissy was like that to Michael as well teasing and bending over to show him her oddly shaped fluffy white butt. And she knows it. Calls him I'm the morning and all of that love stuff.

What kind of roo is Gabrielle?

Crazy! I have one Dominique and i don't think he's had a turn with her. She's next to the top. My Speckled Sussex made his comb bleed the first time she met him. Bit him right through the poultry netting. I couldn't believe it! She's top dog though.

My Welsummer thinks Piangi hung the moon. She seems to want him to know she's "open for business" but he only wants what doesn't want him!
