Hello everyone. DaisyBuff here. I was wondering, are chicken vaccines needed? To be honest, none of my chickens have ever gotton vaccines. I hear that some vaccines for poultry are important I am thinking about getting my hens vaccinated. Ages: Buff Orpington 2 years 2 Rhode Island Reds : 1 year Are there any important poultry vaccines I should take in consideration to get my chickens vaccinated? Thanks, DaisyBuff

No. I've never had my birds vaccinated nor will I.
Here where I live some folks vaccinate their birds for fowl pox due to mosquitos.
Practice strict biosecurity, provide fresh clean water/feed, clean out pens and coops on a regular basis, inspect your birds once in awhile and worm them. Keep stress at a minimum and you're birds will be fine.

I have mine vaccinated at the hatchery. Over the years, I've noticed my vaccinated birds live longer than the nonvaccinated purchased from local breeders.

Depends how many chickens you have.
I have a small flock so I don't vaccinate mine (2 were already vaccinated thouh). Even if they get the vaccine for cocci and Mareks they can still catch it.
If you have LOTS of chickens, it' worth doing it

Hi iv had mine vaccinated, they give them two. Think it’s more for if your eating their produce to prevent salmonella but it’s owner’s choice if this helps 😊 x

I have 3 hens. I've never heard much about Mareks, But My uncle came down to my farm yesterday he said he had to get rid of all his chickens due to Mareks, As always he just had to pet my chickens, ( that old man is just that kind of chicken lover ) So I wasn't going to say no, but he did not tell me his chickens had Mareks until AFTER he held them! I know chickens can get paralyzed by Mareks! I know that humans can't catch Mareks, but I don't think that we can get the virus on our skin\ clothes and then spread it to other birds so I think they should be fine.

Marek’s can easily spread by clothing and shoes. It spreads through feather dust (chicken dander). It’s extremely contagious.
You cannot vaccinate a chicken that is older than three days old.

This is worrying. He held my buff Orpington and pet my Rhode Island Red. They are acting like themselves. Happy and Healthy looking. How long after exposure do chickens show symptoms?

They aren’t guaranteed to show symptoms. However, if you have any sudden deaths, I would get them necropsied.
