I have 4 pekin and 2 mallard ducks in their own run. I know ducks don't mind the snow and rain like chickens, but we have had 50+ mph winds with snow sleet and rain. It is down to 20 degrees or so and these ducks still just waddle around their run never dreaming of entering their shelter. Is this pretty normal for them? I thought for sure they would head for shelter during this windstorm.

My mallards never go into a shelter..I know our weather is different than y'alls but...LOL They do have an oil gland that makes it to where their feathers are waterproof...so maybe that could be why they rain, sleet doesn't bother them...

Oh my, My ducks are wimps.. They love the rain but shiver in the snow! Mine know "Beddies" and go waddling up their ramp at bedtime into their little duck house to be locked up for the night.

See how pathetic mine are? They were shivering and it was sunny out! Silly ladies...

I'm fairly new to ducks myself, but have read on here that they often shun shelter, even in bad weather. I've got two hens that will go into their dog house at night, but the drake stays just outside the door, 'guarding' them. It's kinda cute.

what kind of duck is that , it looks like a SQ saxony

My ducks are housed with our geese and chickens. They have always been together since they were babies and they are herded into the coop each night. There are nights when it's dark out and my geese & ducks are still in the run or free ranging but near the coop and they don't hesitate to enter the coop when they see me coming. The geese & the ducks are the 1st ones usually to leave the coop too each morning but on cold days like we are having this week, I've kept them inside because of the windchill being soo low.

My wild ducks and call ducks never come out of their shelter which is contantly open with a pop door. They must realize that there is no use coming out since the pond is frozen. They only come out when i call to them and bring them unfrozen water.

Mine only really go in there house when there is a buch of new people in the backyard. Besides that they are always out of it every once nad a while they will take a nape during the day in there. At night they love to sleep next to the pond.

My hubby teases me saying I put the house there just to make me feel better and the ducks could care less.

I have 5 different pens with shelters and all the ducks have now started using their shelters. They do come outside during the day as that is where their food and water is, but at night they are all inside their shelters. I do leave the doors open so they can go in and out whenever they want. I might add though, we have had some real cold weather here this week with night time temps reaching -15, yes that's 15 below. Day temps are barely reaching the single digits. Hope it warms up soon - I am ready for spring.
