A well built DIY incubator can perform very well but they are not cheap
to build and there are a lot of affordable incubators on the market today
and some of them work fairly well. If you want an incubator to use just
for hatching like I do then a DIY incubator is well worth building and they
are easy to clean and give hatching chicks plenty of room to move about
while they dry. Also an incubator made with ¾ inch wood and ¼ inch lexan
for a top will work in a lot cooler environment than most store bought
incubators. About 50 years ago I started trying to incubate eggs but had very
little luck. There were some people in my area that was raising game fowl so
I talked to them about their incubators and how they worked and their
incubators where all deferent and all got different results and then about 45
years ago I found an ad for a incubator different than any had ever seen. It
was made by Marsh Farms and it was expensive for that time and made a big
clam about what it could do and they wert wrong. It had an electronic
thermostat and used an air baffle that worked like a central heating unit and I
was getting 99-100% hatches from it. I tried to copy this method but until
recently the parts I needed was not available or too big and too expensive.
Now with the internet and new products coming available all the time I have
now built one that works very well. Here is a list of parts and where to get
them. I hope in some way this can help you build a DIY incubator or repair
or even upgrade an old incubator.
8025 mm Dual Ball Bearing fan 110v $10.00
2 ½ meters 74 Ohm Silicone Rubber Heating Cable = 65 watts $3.75
W3001 digital LED temperature controller thermostat switch probe
thermometer thermostat sensor 110V/220V and it has a start and stop setting
that can be set to 1/10th of a degree apart so it can maintain steady temperature.
It only reads in Celsius but that is okay because I use the wet bulb, dry bulb
method and for under $3.00 it can’t beat.
20 Egg Incubator Turner with 1/240 rpm 110V motor $18.00
https://www.aliexpress.us is where you can find these parts and more.
