hi,

My favorite hen seems to have lost a few toes due to frostbite. They are healed nicely. I didn't even notice at first. I just happened to notice he wasn't walking and scratching like she used to. Where her toes/nail were are clean stumps. Will they grow back or will she adapt?

She will adapt, but they will not grow back. Many chickens learn to live almost normal lives without a leg or being blind, so don’t worry about your hen, she’ll be a totally happy hen, even without her toes!

I beg to differ because I know first hand that chickens toes and nails CAN grow back, at least partially, albeit extremely rare. I have pictures I would love to upload of said toes/nails but I can't figure out how to from my phone gallery.
Quick backstory...
My chicken had one of her feet nearly completely ripped off by a raccoon one night as she was roosting on a branch a little too close to the wire wall, (on Xmas Eve of all nights!). After bringing her inside, cleaning, treating then tightly bandaging her bloody stump, I left it undisturbed for a couple weeks, (which I don't recommend if your chicken will be healing in the coop). After the bandage came off, Peggy, as she became known as, had a perfectly clean, smooth stump and she managed exceptionally well with it.
Fast forward 3 years when sadly Peggy died of unrelated causes, and to my utter amazement her once smooth stump now had one full sized claw and two partial toes and one teenie little claw starting on the second little semi-toe!!
I don't know how it happened, but it for sure happened!! So, there IS hope!!
