A baby bird fell out of it nest yesterday and I have been caring for it. I have been feeding it worms and hard boiled eggs but I was wondering if it needs to have grit with its food? I have been giving it grit just in case but is it really necessary? Should I raise the bird and let it go when it is older or what? I read on some sites it said to leave the bird where it is and the parents would take care of it from the ground, but we have 4 dogs that are dying to get their mouths on him as soon as I put him down, and nest is WAY too high to reach even with a ladder. He seems to be doing pretty so far so what should I do?

He does not need grit because he is getting soft food. He does need nutritious food. The wildlife center told me to feed baby birds a good quality dog food. Either canned food or soaked dry food will do. They told me that is what they use. I have raised any number of baby birds following their advice. They are overwhelmed this time of year and they were more than happy to tell me how to raise the babies myself.

Thank you!
I got up this morning and the bird looks really sick! He isn't standing up anymore he's laying on his side with his eyes closed but he was doing great great yesterday. Do you know whats the matter with him? He seems like he's dying! He seems to weak to even eat.
Please help!

He may be dehydrated. If you can get some poultry nutri drench into him, a single drop wicked in from the side of his beak, and perhaps some electrolytes: (1/2 tsp baking soda, and 1/2 tsp salt, 2 tbsp. sugar in a quart of water, that might revive him. You should call your nearest rehab center for advice.

Thank you very much!
I have not been giving him water because it says on most sites not to do so. But I did give him some when I realized he was very sick. I did give him water yesterday though.
