Does anyone feed their chickens Nyjer Thistle Seed?

I have given them to my chickens before. Now I bought a big bag of it and want to know if I'm the only one who does this.

I did as a "treat", adding a little of the black seeds to add contrast to their regular yellow chicken food. I'm pretty sure it would be unhealthy to feed them the seeds as a large part of their diet. I had the leftover seeds after I finished filling my finch socks and figured the chickens would like it.

I don't feed them regularly because they're expensive! But I don't see any problem with feeding them, my hens fought over them.

I feed it to my quail as treats. I only give small amounts, though. This isn't so much due to the cost, but because I don't want to throw off their protein levels too much.
