Does having sand in the run burn chickens feet?

We just finished our chicken run and I am debating if I should put something down over the current dirt (as they ate all the grass now). I have a large tractor tire in there that I am going to make a chicken bath out of. I was also planning to put down sand in the run as so many people recommend but then I got to thinking that this may burn their feet as I only have a wire roof to keep predators out. There are a few trees around it but it gets so HOT here in South Carolina and I know when I go to the beach you cant walk on that stuff without shoes! So I was wondering how y'all fair in the south with sand in the run?

I live up north, but we have really hot days in the summer and my chickens love flopping/digging around in the sand. I think their feet (like dogs') are probably tougher than ours since they don't rely on shoes! Your chickens should be fine.
