i have a broody mama that has pushed two hatching eggs out from under her. one chick hatched but died. want to help the other one, i put it back under her but she pushed it out again. it is chirping. i do not have an incubator. i have a heating pad for a dog which i have the egg on now. what else can i do/

thanks for the help

It's important to keep the temp at about 99-100-deg F, and 70% or so humidity. When I had a hatching chick with trouble, I did this: I put a heating pad (you could use a hot water bottle, anything similar) in a shoebox, lined with a soft towel, and another soft DAMP rag to lay the egg into. I placed a thermometer underneath the egg, to make sure it never got too hot or too cool. I kept the box open and the upper part of the egg exposed for ventilation. Lay the egg on its side, NOT on its end. Hoping other more experienced folks will chime in soon.... good luck with your little one!

Heating pad should work. Put it some sort of container where you can get humidity but with some air flow. If you have a thermometer you want to keep it around 99 degrees. If you don’t have one just feel for warm body temp.

i have it on a heating pad with a moist towel. the chick just put its beak out i think the shell in that area is already gone, just has the membrane

Do NOT help to pick off any more shell at this point, and especially don't tear the membrane. It looks like blood is still flowing in the membrane. If you tear it, it could bleed to death. Be patient. Once the chick fully absorbs the yolk, and the blood veins dry up, it'll get itself out. Meanwhile, keep it damp so the membrane doesn't dry out and stick to the chick. You can use a Q-tip and warm water to dab a little water on the surface if needed.

In a worse case scenario you can rig up a box with a heat lamp and a tray of water for humidity. The important thing is to keep it warm and keep the conditions higher in humidity. You can afford to be a little less accurate humidity and temperature wise but if you have a thermometer, put it next to the hatching chick and use that to determine the heat reaching the egg. Then adjust the lamp as needed. It's not the best solution but it works well enough to at least try if you have no other options.

its occassionally moving a bit, i put some coconut oil on the membrane with a q tip. i did find a thermometer so trying to get the temp around 100. i'll keep you posted/ thanks for the responses

so this chicks rt foot is up by its head. is that the correct position. i just noticed it kicking but he's not connecting with the shell.

thanks
