Ok, I have a good splint on my little gold roo's "knee" well joint where foot meets lower leg. However he is out at the hip. I've been advised to get his weight off that leg, both legs, by making a swing for him in a dog crate, and I am trying to do that this morning, where food and water are within reach but he won't put weight on that leg. Hunting for a good picture of this, I've found a couple. guess I'll post one when I get done.

he can't control it at the hip, he has movement and flips it around til he gets where he's going in his little dog crate. Or he did until this morning. Now we are going to see if keeping it in a good position will let it heal.

He launched off the top of the dog crate in the run and probably caught his foot in the wire fencing that runs from there over the younger chick's pen (which is dog crate and its little front "yard") Dislocating hip, and then I think he got the joint where foot meets leg trying to get around. The brace on that joint is not cutting off circulation and is well padded. but bracing hip was not possible. I can't afford a vet on a chicken, exotic vets are expensive, so I am making do. and he is eating and drinking well and when I hung the water he didn't want me handling him so he turned his body away. Will see how this works.

I would think that you would need a farm vet for a dislocated hip, but the sprained or broken lower leg might heal with rest. Xrays are expensive, but the only way to know if you are dealing with a dislocation or a sprain. Chicken slings are good to get them off their feet to rest them and to sit in front of food and water for periods throughout the day. Here is a good link about homemade sling chairs, and look at post 5, 11-14 especially:

I am afraid we are on the home vet theory, I am barely making the bills. he may never walk pretty or fast, but I can't do a $1000 chicken. Sorry to disappoint. I didn't cull him, he's eating well, does good hobbles which are painful to watch, drinking well, excreting well and confined to a small crate so he does not get picked on, in a back bedroom, by himself, in air conditioning. I'm off work today. when I work I will be gone 10 to 12 hours and I don't have anyone to put him on and off his day sling, besides which he tries to use the leg when he's off it and he's been isolated in a dog crate for about 3 weeks since he hurt himself and it did not improve. so I'm making sure the poop goes past the tshirt and he can't move himself around.

Dislocated joints require surgery if not fixed right away, and it is too late at this point anyway, I would think. I hope that he gets along okay, but time will tell.

time will have to tell. I have a $1500 rabbit who is a mutt bunny that hurt her eye, and I managed to pay that bill off a couple of years ago. but yes he will heal in some fashion or not and time will tell. The day he did this I was going to be gone 12 hours the next day, If I don't work there is no house, no home and no chicken feed. So I put him in a dog crate, no brace, just to keep separate, feed water and observe. I think 3 or 4 weeks ago. It's busy season
