Hello everyone. New here and to chickens. Our family has a total of 12, 6 just started laying and 6 are 3 months old. I have read that double Yolk eggs are not common for chickens but do happen. Of my 6 chickens currently laying, they are all great layers (5-6 eggs everyday). I have no complaints with my girls and they have great personalities. I am worried about 2 of them though as every egg they lay is a double yolk. Every. Egg. Both of them have been laying now for over a month and it's the same everytime. To give you an idea...we had eggs tonight and went 5 out of 5 double yolks...the other day we went 6/6....is this something to be concerned about for health issues? Or is my wife right in just saying they love us and we are lucky?

I don't think its anything to be worried about. Double yokes just happen sometimes. Its pretty weird that they keep laying double yolk eggs though. They'll probably grow out of it.. My hen Sukie layed a few double yoke eggs and then grew out of it.

I've had a few chickens over the years that consistently layed double yolkers. I just got a giant egg the other day. Bigger than a duck egg, lol. It was 2 full eggs in one shell. I feel a big sorry for the hen who layed that one.

The two breeds we have had over the years that laid mostly double yolk eggs were Rhode Island Reds and New Hampshires. One of my mother's double-yolk Rhode Island Reds lived to be almost ten years old, and was laying those double yolk eggs right up the end, so I don't think it's a problem for the hen, herself. I have to say, they don't fit so well in the egg carton with the other eggs!

I know that breeders don't like to see double-yolk eggs because they don't hatch as well, as you can imagine. However, they can hatch, and you can see videos of double-yolk eggs hatching on YouTube.

Right now I have a four year old Easter Egger who lays occasional double yolk eggs. We are just enjoying them for breakfast, not hatching any...yet.

Good to here it's nothing serious. Of my 6, 2 are Rhode Island Reds and 4 Australops....weird think is it's one of the reds, and one of the lops that does this. Guess I'll just consider myself lucky. They taste great! Haha

I think sometimes it can happen with new layers until they work out the kinks in the system so to speak haha you can get all sorts of weird things like double yolkers, shell less eggs, misshapen or miscolored eggs, eggs inside an egg (like two full shells), etc. etc. they should work out the kinks eventually. Or sometimes they may keep laying them. :D

Also sometimes the higher production breeds and hybrids will lay them more often.

I don’t think it’s a problem for the hens although sometimes they may lay less eggs because they’re only born with a certain number of eggs and if they’re using all of them in double yolks instead of individual eggs you might get less long term but it shouldn’t be a noticeable difference at all I wouldn’t think.
