So hubby and I processed some of our Barred Rocks today, and I kept their feet separately. I have a crazy idea that I want to dry 2 of them, so I could send them to an anthropologist friend of ours that would get a kick out of it. At the moment, the feet are in the freezer. How should I go about drying them so it will be safe to mail and safe for him to keep for years to come?

Do you have a food dehydrator? I've dried chicken feet for craft items (yes, there is a market) in mine. They take about 3 days. Make sure they're good and dry, and wrap a paper towel around them and check for oil oozing out. If oil still oozes, they aren't quite done.

You could also try burying them in a container of desiccant granules, I think some craft stores carry them for drying flowers. You could put them in a sealed container with the granules, in the fridge, if you wanted.

I put mine in a container of coarse salt - like kosher salt. The desicant stuff would work well, also.

I make "hoodoo chicken feet" - they sell on ebay pretty well, you just pretty them up with feathers, beads etc.. hang them on a fishline or a leather strap and folks hang them from their car rear view mirrors, etc...

I sold one to a guy who wanted it for his ren faire pirate costume (ala Johnny Depp) to hang in his hair.

different strokes... and all that

DH kept the wild turkey legs one season to show someone and they were forgotten in our front entry and they never smelled but dried beautiful nothing but dry air.

Pictures! Hmmm. . . I wonder what my DH would do if I started drying the feet?

I'll have to see if I have any around I can take a pic of. I haven't sold them in a while.

I do have two or three feet laying around I could make up, however, if someone wanted to see one and I cannot find one already done.

eta - if you "pose" them before drying - you can make them clutch onto things or even "give the finger" to passing motorists (if it is hung on your rear view mirror
