My daughter has a 1 year old bearded bantam d'uccle hen that she LOVES.

She weighs no more than 1.5 pounds.

Over the last couple of weeks we have found a few blood stained eggs, but couldn't figure out who was laying them even with vent checks daily. Yesterday we found another bloods stained egg and this hen had a tiny bit of a prolapse.

I put preparation h on her and she acted normal all day eating and drinking fine. Today she laid another blood stained eggs and her vent was very irritated; I held a tucks witch hazel pad on her for several minutes and then rubbed her with preparation h.

We put electrolytes in her water and I thought maybe she needed some poultry cell; I read on the directions that the chicken dosage is 1cc to 3cc so I gave her 1cc directly in her mouth in approximately 1/3 cc increments. Immediately she began breathing gurgly and acting like her throat burned. I gave her another 1cc of electrolyte water which seemed to help some, but now she is clearly uncomfortable and not interested in food or water. I held her head as straight up as possible and she swallowed when I gave her the poultry cell.

With the electrolytes I didn't have to hold her mouth open because she likes the taste of it so she drank it when I gave her drops at the sides of her mouth. After still seeming gurgly I remembered that we had vetrx so I put 3 drops in her mouth and a few drops under each wing. Their coop is covered and they are on a bark mulch flooring.

We have been feeding Kalmbach feeds 17% protein.

Should I stop worrying or should I be looking at pneumonia as a possibility?

Also, what could be causing the blood stained eggs? I would like to prevent this in the future if at all possible.

We also have another coop with the exact same setup that has Nankin Chickens in it; we have gotten a few blood stained eggs from them over the last month as well.

Thanks so much!!!

What do you feed, including treats?

I'd give her 300mg Calcium Citrate+D3 once daily for a week. For a hen her size, I'd go ahead and break the tablet in 1/2 and give her a piece at a time. Pull down on the wattles, pop the tablet in, let go of the wattles and let her swallow.

It sounds like she's prolapsing with laying an egg. Hopefully the Calcium will help with this. The tissue prolapsing may be bleeding a little.

Has she been dewormed? If so, with what, how much and when?

Sounds like she probably aspirated some of the vitamins. Do you notice any wheezing?

I'd see how she is in the morning. See if she will eat/drink on her own.

Here's how to give oral medications:

We feed kalmbach 17% protein layer feed

She did seem a little wheezy last night so I gave her 1/2 cc procaine penicillin g.

I will get the calcium that you recommend, for now I gave her 1/2 of a tums.

We always have oyster shell out as well.

Thank you so much for your response!

She is still wheezy today and we have not dewormed recently. I have ivermectin, piperazine and Pyrantel pamoate, what is your recommendation?
Thank you!
Giving the antibiotic is a good idea if she was wheezy. It does sound like she may have aspirated some liquids.

Piperazine or Pyrantel Pamoate will treat Roundworms.
Ivermectin will treat mites.

Most use Safeguard 10% Liquid Goat Dewormer at a rate of 0.23ml per pound of weight given orally once daily for 5days in a row to treat most worms that poultry can have except for Tapeworm.

Does the kalmbach feed not have enough calcium?
Some hens may require more calcium than others, the feed, like most layer feeds, provides an adequate "average" intake of calcium for most laying pullets and hens. Generally, you still want to supply supplemental calcium via Oyster Shell free choice.

The Extra Calcium that I'm suggesting is crisis management for a short window of time i.e. one week, this is the see if the extra calcium gets her through this and she doesn't prolapse.
