We have been having a problem with rats in our duck yard. Just now my muscovy caught and ate one! Is she going to be okay? She swallowed it whole! She was walking around with it hanging from her beak, and we were going to take it away, but then... gulp. Has anyone else ever seen anything like this?

She'll be fine, so long as there isn't any rat poison anywhere the rat may have gotten into before it was eaten by your duck. That'd be my only concern, possible poison transferred to your duck. Ducks are omnivores, so they do eat smaller animals (frogs, lizards, etc) when they get the chance. Totally normal. A little unusual for one to eat a rat, but Muscovies are huge and should be able to handle it. I've seen chickens eat mice before.

Thank you. No, there isn't any poison around.

(Muscovies are huge? Maybe mine isn't a muscovy then? She's the one in my photo here. She's only about half the size of our other ducks.)

Oh, maybe she is a petite (or mixed?) Muscovy then. ;) She is definitely at least part Muscovy, but they are pretty big ducks. What other breeds do you have?

Mine have eaten may toads. What a sight it is as the legs don't always cooperate.

She's killed two more since then. One was too big to swallow, so she gave it up for treats from us.

I'm amazed. This little duck is better than a cat!
