I'm trying to come up with a design for duck breeding pens. Unsure if I should just make them so they can be housed in them year round Or keep it separate and when not breeding have them in big coup. They are free range during the day. So as soon as the season is over I will Let them free range together again. I would love to see people coups and do you use breeding pens to let them sleep in year round. Appreciate all advice. Thanks!!

The chickens and ducks will be in different coups at night.

Are you going to incubate the eggs or let them hatch them? If you're letting them hatch them then you may want a pen to keep the drakes separate during the period they are on the nest and have ducklings.

Also for the pen design it truly is what suits your area the most, if it snows where you are you may want to design the pen so it stays warm in winter and in summer you could open something which works as a vent.

For now I will be using A incubator. Down the road I'd like to let them try to hatch some when they want to. I do live in a cold place. I'm in Michigan. Winters can be very cold and Lots of snow. I have a big grainery small type barn. My chicken coup is the same material is my barn. It's pretty nice. From what I'm reading I could use wood to make duck houses. Do you have breeding pens

I have two separate pens for my Breeding Ducks. One is a covered 10X10 Dog run with a Dog house inside.
Then I have a large Coop/Run for my other group.
I free range separated during breeding season. When the season is over I free range everyone together..
My Chickens have zero interaction with my Ducks.

Do you live whet wits cold.. I figured I'd have to separate them in febaury if so the dog houses would still be on for febaury? That's what i was going to do while breeding one day let this group out next day the other. When I'm all done then let them be together.

Definitely gets cold here. I'm in Alberta, Canada and it's already snowing here...:sick :tongue
