My Ancona drake lately has been following me very close around the yard every time I am outside! He doesn't even pay any attention to my other female Ancona duck while I am outside! Does anyone else's ducks do this? And why does he do this?

Thanks,
Rachelle

Splash, my drake is on the left and Rosie my hen is on the right!

Is it normal for ducks to follow their caregiver? I raised them since they were 2 day old ducklings. They are now 4 and a half months old and just started following me around the yard! He is always less than a foot away from me!

Thanks! You all helped a lot! When I feed my ducks they chose to follow me over the food! Haha!

Everyday my drake Splash, follows me around whenever I am outside! When he follows me he pecks me on the back of my leg! Is there a reason he's pecking me? And how can I stop him from doing this? Also, when I go for a walk with my family down a road by my house, when I come back, I can hear them quacking and they will be standing next to the road waiting for me! Now I put them in their pen while I'm gone. I have caught them by the road a couple times now! I hate leaving them in their pen because they don't understand why they can't come out! Could there be someway to teach them to stay close to home?

It's kind of like small children they need to be in a secure place when they can't be watched, this is the way it is for your ducks, think of their pen as their play pen till you get back from your walk. and your drake is letting you know he wants you in his harem, if you want to make an impression on him and make him stop, when he does this gently flatten him out on the ground with your hand on his shoulder area and lower back, this is how another drake would show dominance over him and what you need to do to get him to realize you are above him in the pecking order. once he quits fighting to get up release him, you may have to do it several times and remind him occasionally but he'll get the message. I still have to remind my drake every once in a while that I'm not one of his girls.

Thank you! I had a feeling that his pecking wasn't kisses! LOL! I will let you know if holding him down will work!

Thanks again,
Rachelle

First off, what beautiful ducks you have. I am having the same problem with my Rouen male who's the same age as yours. I posted the same and got wonderful advice. I'm going Miss Lydia's way and flattening him until he calms down. Hope it works for you and for me!
