How do geese differer from duck in temperment?

Behavior?

Do geese range more than ducks?

When are geese most vocal?

I am thinking of getting some geese. I was told that they are not just big ducks so i am just trying to learn how they are different. I have neighbors, they are very tolerant.

Just based on the geese and ducks that I've had. It seems like the geese are just a tick less messy than ducks and they seem to form more of an attachment to their people. With that being said, my Great Aunt Emma, kept a house duck for close to 15 years. She even took it to the cemetary to visit her husband's grave...everyday. It was partially house trained...I kid you not. She called it "Dudley" - it went everywhere with her. She had a special elevated cushion rigged up in her car so Dudley could see where they were going. I'm not sure what breed Dudley was - maybe a mix - he was dark with some green feathers.

My ducks paid attention to me...but, the geese seemed to like being with me a little more. The geese I have now, RT's and Sebs...seem to know what "Time for Bed" means. I really enjoy geese and I hope you do to. They bring me a whole lot of peace, comfort. I love making them happy. I look forward to my time spent with them everyday...even in crappy weather.I just love them. But, I haven't house trained any of them...yet.

Good Luck in your Quest...have fun!

I had geese years ago; loved them, they were friendly and fun & back then we had fenced in horse pasture so they had plenty of room to roam. They were beautiful, intelligent, loyal.

Getting back into chickens this past year--and really considered geese but we no longer have the big fenced in space, so I opted for ducks instead. Have been very happy with our 2 ducks, both are runner duck crosses & they are friendly, talkative, interactive--really nice & fun members of our feathered family.

You are going to get different experiences from people here. I do have both and while my pilgrims are not shy they are not overly aggressive either. Both geese and ducks hang out together. Geese leave bigger messes than my ducks. My geese are more vocal too, but I love hearing them 'talk' all the time except when I'm on a business call.

I do not feed them by hand, I've heard this keeps them from nipping. Mine do not nip. If I had to choose between ducks and geese. I would keep my ducks. JMO

I find my geese to be more interactive with me than the ducks. I hesitate to say they seem more intelligent than the ducks when they look and talk with me. Don't get me wrong, the ducks are bright enough, but there is a spark to geese that I find hard to explain.

Behavior?
As was previously mentioned, I find geese also to be less messy than ducks. I will say that my geese and ducks get along great and right now, the geese are especially protective of some ducklings that I have.

Do geese range more than ducks?
I find no difference in their ranging habits. My flock of ducks and geese go off together at the same time and return home at the same time.

Geese (and ducks) are vocal when they are startled, happy, protecting, alerting and talking with me.

If you are thinking of getting geese, I would say go for it. Regardless of the age you get them, talk with them, interact with them and let them know you are not a threat to them. They will reward you with much devotion and pleasure. My one gander comes up to me each morning asking to be picked up and stroked and petted. It's a ritual that we do every day. His mate will let me pet her, but she wants little to do with being picked up. She thinks about it and then backs away just when I think she's going to let me.

Ducks are much more aloof than geese. My ducks want nothing to do with me but the geese are always following me around when I am outside. Geese are more like dogs, ducks are more like cats.

Geese have a way of bewitching you into tending and loving on them as if they were your own children. In fact, I haven't said "Mommy is going to get you your foodies now" for about twenty years

until I got my first goslings. I have a grandchild but I am a Mommy again.

Or, holding them, "Oh you wittle precious boy, you are Mommy's precious little feather baby"

).

Their eyes are full of soul and intelligence and they gaze at you so longingly. They follow you like dogs, and want your attention much the same way.

If you don't want such a devoted barnyard pet, allow them to grow up with a flock of chickens or ducks. If you brood them in the house, they will be so cute and lovable they will bewitch you and you'll be as imprinted on them as they are on you. Ask me how I know
