Hi Everyone,

hope you are well, I am looking for some advice I’ve recently hatched my first group of chicks and have 8, they are 4 days old and last night I think a tiny brown mite crawled off one onto my arm as I was holding it. I was told by a chicken owning friends that food grade DE dust could be applied to the area under each wing and will help rid them and to then make up a dust bath however this friend only has adult chickens.

with mine being so young I’m looking for advice to see if it’s safe to give each chick a light dust of DE powder around the wings and bent or all over? also Would it then be safe to construct them a dust bath for the brooder to maintain their hygiene and hopefully rid them of any mites that may be present, if they can have a dust bath at this early stage what should I use? I have a full bag of play sand unopened that I would use for my toddler but could use that....and finally should I add some DE powder in a small amount to the play sand for them to bath in? Sorry for the long thread I’m new to the chicken raising life and don’t want to do anything that could harm them!
Thanks for your help 😁

DE wont do anything for mites. Buy Permethrin dust and put a small amount of the dust on your fingers and gently rub it in on your chicks. Avoid the eyes as best as you can. Dust all your chicks in the same manner.
