I rescued a hen and I have NO history on her.. owner said she thinks her leg was caught in some netting and got hurt.
Day 1- i put here in the tub and let her rest. Left her alone after some long travel time.
Day 2- I bathed her to look her over, she was extremely infested with mites.. thousands, I assumed they were eating her alive and she was anemic, underweight and this was causing her weak legs. I treated her, fed her vitamins and layer feed 18%, lots of water. She slept for a really long time once the mites were gone.
Day 3- I started looking at her legs. Her right leg is the "injured" leg that she's dragging a bit. It has some muscle and she reacts when I move it so not paralyzed. Her left leg that is stronger and assumed fine is actually in really bad shape. Her hock is scabbed over and swollen, looks bad.. like she'd been walking on that hock and dragging her other leg for a bit. She curls her toes on this one but they aren't stiff. See pic
Day 4- I am starting to mix my days up so might be out of order a bit. But I realize she hasn't laid any eggs.. I gave her Epson bath and lube and felt around for an egg but I really can't tell. She is so skinny I just keep pushing food. She is eating and drinking really well, she can get around and isn't lethargic. Black diarhea
Day 5- more mite checks and Epson baths.. no mites have returned. No egg. Still eating and drinking. Her legs are getting weaker and she's starting to do a pushing stance.. she props herself up and just keeps "pushing". At this point I assumed it's mareks or an egg for sure... still diarrhea, blackish green.
*NOTE* she has a large hump, egg size ABOVE her vent, up near her tail feathers? Can an egg travel that direction? Causing nerve issue but allowing poop?
Day 6- she doesn't look good. Very little movement, won't eat- i figure she is going to pass in the night.
Day 7- she didn't pass- is alert and looks happy, eats and drinks.. more diarrhea. I treated her wound again and bandaged it to give some relief. More Epson bath and massages.. I'm using coconut oil for lube.
I did give her 2 small doses of antibiotics for that leg. Tums, poultry Cell, vermX, vitamins.. squash and layer feed. Everytime she poops i wash her and do Epson bath- about twice a day because it's pretty gross.
I have read markes will kill them because they can't reach their food.. well I'm feeding her so will she just live as long as I feed her or will it kill her other ways?
If she's egg bound it said they die in 2 days because they can't poop- she's pooping (not solid) and it's been 7 days. I am Not going to cull her.. I get it, I should.. don't care, she keeps improving and I don't farm for profit. She doesn't seem to be suffering.. she walks around using her wings.. I dunno. If anyone has a suggestion I'll try it!
