Did you know that are a few different old-time ways to preserve fresh eggs for many months without electricity?

Of all the old-time methods of preserving fresh eggs the “water glass” method gives the best and most dependable result. Fresh, unwashed eggs kept in a solution of water glass will remain good and useable for 4 to 6 months when properly collected and stored.

“Water Glass” or “liquid glass” is sodium silicate and is the generic name for sodium metasilicate (Na2SiO3).

WaterGlass is available on line in the chemical form if you go to Lehmans. Email me at [email protected] and I will send you the article on this process.

Story: My Mother-in-law in Germany did this during the WWII and beyond. I was astonished to find EGGS were capable of being kept fresh for months, and she had them much longer than 6 months at a time.

She had a few Crocks, some filled with pickles and other veggies; and I saw first hand a crock filled with eggs. submerged in a gel-like substance. She called it Calk (Water Glass - liquid sodium silicate) and although the Calk was used for many purposes, it is NON-Toxic and Environmentally friendly.

Alice took a few eggs from the crock and washed off the gel coating. The eggs did not have any smell or discoloration, they look like the day she placed them in the crock. The shells were nice and firm and when cracked open the yokes were firm and yellow-orange just as if they were opened after hatching. The taste was natural also. Great for cooking or hard boiled.

Lastly: If you have too many eggs, I suggest taking some and HARD BOILING them for personal use and/or mixing with the chicken food. The protein is great for advancing healthy chickens with nice feathers and perky attitudes. I take eggs that sit more than 10 days and boil them. I use a potato masher or chopper and mash the eggs onto a paper towel. I let air dry for a day. Then I mix the mashed egg into the crumbles or corn and the chickens go crazy over the food. If the egg mash is too wet, mixing with the crumbles helps absorb the moisture and there is no chance of mold when used the same day. Try IT....Lauren
