Hello,

Does anyone know if Elector PSP is safe to use on my baby chicks? The chicks are only a day or two old but the flock has a nasty mite infestation.

Thanks in advance!

Mites do not usually live on chickens. Are you sure that's what you're dealing with and not poultry lice?

I would be inclined to treat the broody hen, if that's your set up, and not the new chicks at this time. Residual action from treating the other chickens and premises should be enough without spraying and drenching the chicks.

Spray the broody hen and the bedding, and watch them. This should be enough to get the chicks too. If not, a tiny amount wiped on each chick, you don't want the babies actually wet!

:welcome :frow The others have given you great advice. I would treat the area where you have the chicks. Since your whole flock is infected, I would treat the coop or wherever you keep your birds and repeat weekly for awhile because it does not kill the mite eggs. Do you have the Elector PSP. If not Permethrin is much less expensive and works. There is no egg withdrawal. If you have a TSC you can get the dust, premixed spray and the concentrate. I use the dust on the birds but not my chicks and THOROUGHLY spray inside of your coop, every crack and crevice where the mites can hide. I buy the concentrate but I have a lot of coops so I mix it in a gallon sprayer and the wand helps me to reach the hard to reach areas. For smaller places the premixed spray is good. Good luck and have fun with you chicks...

I see no one is recommending application to young chicks. What about 8 weekers and 4 month olds? I've seen lice in the other coops, since they're all connected via walls. The rodents surely are carrying the lice back and forth. I'm working on the rodent problem too...but can I spray or dust these chicks ? Safe?
