electric fence does not hold goats HELP

Goats almost never stay in electric fencing. Neither do sheep or llamas. They are stinkers that way! It also doesn't protect them well from predators like dogs, coyotes, etc.

When I was building fences for my goats I always tested them with water. I would build the fence then fill the fenced area with water. If it leaked it wouldn't keep in the goats. I couldn't resist. LOL I have never had very good luck with electric fences for goats. If they want whats on the other side they just take the jolts and keep going.

we had to use 6 ft. welded wire, and cattle panels, and a big heavy gate to keep our goats in, the cattle panels and heavy gate is for our billy! He pushes and pushes!
our neighbor has electric, but you need a pretty powerful fence, we have electric around the bottom line of the fence, to keep them from rubbing against the fence.

LOL I could have told you electric wouldn't hold goats. No one ever believes me though, so I just don't bother giving advice about it any more...

I would use no less than a 1 joule box (I have a 1.5 j for my horses)...but I would use it in CONJUNCTION with wire (welded or woven) fence (more to prevent rubbing and climbing than to keep them in).

Good luck.

When I had my fenced built, I had them use 2 X 4 inch wire with a board around the top, knowing that I wanted horses, goats, chickens, etc. It goes all the way to the ground to keep things from climbing underneath. It has contained my horses, chickens (excpet the leghorns), ducks (excpet the muscovey), geese and the goats. And nothing will keep the guineas back.

I have seen goats behind electic, but it was like 6 or 8 strands that were 4 inches apart near the bottom and then farther apart at the top.

What type of goats do you have.

goats and sheep stay well in an electric fence..but you need to make a proper one, high tensil, with tightners and at least 5-6 wires..usually where they sell high tensil wire there will be phamplets on how to build a good fence,it wont be cheap but they do work and actually are cheaper in the long run..thats all I ever had on my old place, and they never got out.

I have 4 nigerians and a pony. I have the pony on electric and tried to put the goats in but they would not stay in, it didn't even seem to faze them. I had to put the goats near the fence with 200 ft welded wire encloser for right now. I am planning in spring to put welded wire around both of them so they can be together and put the electric at the top. one thing that I have found on the welded wire is that twinkle and trouble like to try to climb it and find any weakness. When they do get out they like to eat the leaves or I here naa naa right outside the house telling me I need to come out and give them attention.
