Hi BYC!!

We are moving our flock to bear country . We have an 8 foot chain link perimeter fence around part of the property. We want to add an electric fence to the perimeter fence. We are worried about our pet dogs, how can we set this up so that nothing gets in from the outside, but if our dogs were to jump on the fence from the inside they won’t get injured. Is this possible? Also what brands do y’all recommend? Where we are now we have fox and raccoon and we have thwarted them so far, but bears and coyotes are a different issue.
Thanks so much.

Welcome! Your dogs need to learn about the fence too! One good zap should be enough to inspire them to avoid it. Good electric fencing is the only way to keep bears out, and that's a big deal.
Premier1fencing.com is a great resource for products and advice, and they do have good people answering the phone too!
Howard E has good advice on this site, although I don't think he's dealing with bears.

Electric fences are designed to be educational devices. The idea is to teach what ever it is that you wish to keep inside to give the electric fence a wide berth. The same learning moment also works at keeping things out.

All that is required if for your dogs to get zapped just one time and after that you would have great trouble even throwing you dog onto the fence.

If you put the hot wire(s) on the outside of the 8' tall chain link fence ... the dogs won't get zapped ...

Put one about 12", 18", 24", 36" 60" .. that should take care of most all ground critters ... also ... hook the ground wire to the actual chain link fence, in addition to a good long ground rod(s)

Some chargers have a low power "learning mode" ... doesn't hurt quite as bad as the full charge, but gets the message across to pets and curious children!

If you are considering the electric netting from premier, I can personally recommend it if you are willing to maintain it properly (keeping the weeds and grass out of it) and don't live in an area with super hard or rocky soil if you have any plans on moving it more than rarely. I've got a 500 foot perimeter of it and haven't lost a bird to ground based predation since it was installed and we have every chicken-hungry predator know to man except probably bear. We even leave the small coop door open at night so the birds can exit first thing in the morning and aren't pulling feathers out of confined frustration.
As far as dogs, I've found it to to be a great fencing for containing them. I've got a very low version also only about 2.5 feet tall that I've used to contain several small dogs. It only takes once and they never approach the fence closely again. Chickens have a slightly longer learning curve.
I personally love the green/black color option they offer. It's nearly invisible in the landscape. A saggy length of the white version on the property is about as sloppy/trashy looking as it can get in my personal opinion.

I posted this in a similar thread.
We called our dog back, but she wasn't listening. This was the one and only time - she avoids the run now. ;)
