Electric Fencing - what's too much power?

Hi there.

A neigbour kindly gave me a electric fencing power box - to attach to a battery. It's a Rutland Electric Shepherd ESB57 Battery Fence Energiser
I've attached a photo of it.

Is anyone clever enough to let me know if this model would be too powerful for poultry fencing?

I'm keen to get up some fencing so they can have a larger area to roam in - but want to make sure I don't nuke them!

Your advice greatly appreciated.

.25 joules is a lighter model. Usually recomended for smaller easier discouraged animal. Bulls and such wouldnt work for them. Look up joule recommendations for livestock. Equate that to the type of predators in your area. When you hook it up watch and make sure they dont get hung up in fence. Thats where animals hurt themselves, trying to get loose. Once zapped they stay away pretty well.

Definitely not too powerful. That charger only has 0.25 stored joules. The output will be less.
I just installed a poultry net that is powered by a plug-in fencer with 1.6 stored joules with 1.2 J output. It certainly gets your attention if you touch the fence. One of the pullets touched it and gave a yelp and flew back. She's fine. They have to touch the hot wires with their combs or wattles to get a zap. Their feathers insulate them.

Thank you! Very useful.

Keep on mind, the purpose of electrified wire is not containing the poultry, but repelling predators....and for that, the more power the better. ..if anything, this might be a tad light
Thank you. I have foxes locally - plus Buzzards. So I think I'll need a light net over the electric fence. My gardens going to be looking very netty! But the Silkies definitely want to get out and roam a bit more.

Thank you so much. I feel much better. Now to work out what battery to get.
